Try this Spilfy Mezcal Old Fashioned drink. This is a modern take on a classic cocktail, with mezcal in place of whiskey. It tastes smoky because of the mezcal, but the añejo tequila cuts through the smoke and gives the drink a golden color with whiskey-like notes of oak.

Ingredients

  • Components: ½ ounce of simple syrup
  • Two dashes of bitters (like Angostura), or additional to taste
  • One cup of ice cubes, or extra if required
  • One 3-inch-long orange peel piece
  • One ounce of mezcal
  • One ounce of aged añejo tequila
  • One Luxardo cherry, if desired

Directions

In an old-fashioned glass, mix bitters and simple syrup. Pour ice into the glass. After squeezing the orange peel to release the oils, place the peel inside the glass. Pour in the tequila and mezcal, and stir until the alcohol has mellowed and the drink is perfectly cold, about 20 seconds. When serving, garnish with a cherry.

A Current Take on a Traditional Cocktail: Mezcal Old Fashioned

Welcome to Mezcalum, where each bottle combines innovation and tradition. We’re thrilled to share with you, as mezcal experts, our special spin on a time-honored favorite: the Mezcalum Old Fashioned. This cocktail, made with our handcrafted mezcal, is more than just a beverage; it’s an exploration of Oaxaca’s interior. Let’s explore the essence of this mixture and discover why it’s an experience rather than just a drink.

What is the background to the old-fashioned drink?

With its origins dating back to the early 1800s, the Old Fashioned cocktail is rich in history. It’s made traditionally with whiskey, sugar, water, and bitters, and is renowned for its flavor depth and simplicity. The Old Fashioned has changed over time as mixologists have experimented with various spirits to give this time-honored drink a modern twist. Our Mezcalum Old Fashioned pays homage to this inventive legacy by incorporating the nuanced and smokey notes of mezcal.

What Makes Your Old Fashioned Mezcalum?

Our mezcal at Mezcalum is not your average spirit. Crafted from the rare and wild varieties of Espadin and Cuishe agave grown in the sun-drenched valleys of Oaxaca, it is a labor of love and tradition. Carlos Méndez Blas, our maestro mezcalero, uses traditional techniques to craft a mezcal full of flavor and history. By adding Mezcalum to your Old Fashioned, you’re weaving a tapestry of artisanal craftsmanship and Mexican culture, not just making a drink.

Guidelines:

Set Up the Glass: Take an Old Fashioned glass and put the sugar cube inside. To completely saturate the sugar cube, add the bitters and a small amount of club soda, if desired. Grind the sugar with a muddler until it dissolves into the soda and bitters.
The Mezcal: Fill the glass with two ounces of Mezcalum Espadin & Cuishe Mezcal. The smoky complexity of our mezcal gives a distinctive twist to the traditional Old Fashioned profile.

Chill: Put ice cubes in the glass and slowly stir the mixture until it is thoroughly chilled. In order to blend the flavors together and preserve the mezcal’s integrity, this step is essential.
Garnish: Drizzle a twist of orange oil over the glass and then drop the orange twist and cherry into it. The strong flavor of the mezcal is enhanced by the citrus and sweetness of these garnishes.

Enjoy yourself: Enjoy the rich, smoky, and faintly sweet notes of your Mezcalum Old Fashioned as you sip.
